An international fashion research project exploring the 'craft of use'

Alternative Dress Codes

The choices we make about what we wear are influenced by life present, lives past and our ideas about our future selves. Expressions of values, aspirations, heritage, understanding and the physical shape of our bodies build a rationale for dress that transcend narrow commercial views about fashion. Instead they give us broader perspectives that honour our reality as well as our aspirations; and connect our psyche with our fibre and fashion choices.

Class trash

"I brought a shirt that I like wearing because it’s a normal shirt but it’s made out of – well you could say it’s actually an ugly fabric. It looks like curtain from the ‘80s or early ‘90s and I like the clash between these bad colours. It’s not actually complementing your own colour or my colour. But then it’s a shirt and I like this contrast between something that’s really trashy and then something that’s supposed to be classy. Some people feel repulsed by it and some people maybe understand that when I combine it with a normal pair of slacks or a nice pair of shoes it creates something new."
